Dear Okanagan Community,
We are reaching out to you with heavy hearts on behalf of the Kyrychenko family, who fled the war in Ukraine and found refuge in the Okanagan in November 2022. Anika and Ivan Kyrychenko arrived with their three children, three-year-old twins and a 8-year-old son, seeking safety and a new beginning.
Tragically, their fresh start has been shattered by an overwhelming tragedy. A few months ago, Ivan, a 34-year-old carpenter, was diagnosed with advanced soft tissue sarcoma that spread to his lungs and spine. Despite enduring excruciating pain and undergoing treatment, Ivan’s condition rapidly deteriorated, and he passed away on August 29, 2024.
“Her world came crashing down around her.”
With Ivan's passing, 35-year-old Anika now faces the daunting challenge of raising three young children on her own, two of whom recently were diagnosed with autism and require specialized care. The loss of their sole provider has thrown the family into severe financial hardship. Anika is struggling to cover essential expenses such as rent, food and even fuel for her vehicle. Alone in Canada without any nearby family, she is overwhelmed by the task of managing these basic needs while dealing with the emotional toll of her situation.
Distraught and overwhelmed, Anika has been relying on her friends within the Ukrainian community for emotional support, childcare for appointments, and help with groceries from the food bank and other necessities.
Anika and the children live in a home they rent that is suitable for the children with a yard that is fenced. She hopes to find employment in the near future to be able to support her family in the long term.
Please consider contributing to help the Kyrychenko family and show them that their new community stands with them. Your generosity can offer a glimmer of hope and a crucial lifeline in these incredibly challenging times.
Thank you for your kindness and generosity.
