UKRAINE STANDS WITH THE OKANAGAN
On Friday August 18th, not even 24 hours after the 2023 Okanagan Fire Storm ravaged our community, members of Kelowna's Ukrainian Catholic Church (Dormition of the Mother of God) banded together and fed those who fled their homes on Thursday night. Church volunteers were comprised of displaced Ukrainians and parish members who were either on evacuation alert/order themselves. Their own difficulties did not stop them from caring for evacuees who had to flee their homes at a moment's notice.

Homemade sandwiches were made, coffee, bottled water and cookies distributed free of charge at Prospera Place.  After spending a night in their cars and on the floors of the arena, many were touched by the kindness and generosity of Ukrainians. People were in tears and commented it comforted them to receive a homemade sandwich made with love.

The church is available to meet other needs evacuees may have during this difficult time. Please feel free to contact them.

  1. To relieve poverty by providing necessities of life, including food, clean water, clothing, medical supplies, medicine, protective gear and/or shelter to victims of war in Ukraine.
  2. To relieve poverty by providing necessities of life, including food, clean water, clothing, protective gear and/or shelter to needy immigrants and Ukrainian refugees and their families as well as offering financial assistance necessary for their relocation and settling in Canada and referring them to the appropriate resources, if necessary.
  3. To relieve poverty by providing financial assistance, to be used for necessities of life, to poor families of volunteers who quit their jobs to travel to Ukraine to help victims of war.
  4. To provide education, counseling and other support services to needy immigrants and Ukrainian refugees including job search programs, translation services, accompaniment and referral service during administrative procedures and information programs on Canadian culture and life in Canada.
